I cannot grow cool Masdies in my area. I tried and failed once and really feel bad about it. I found out there were some warm growing ones and so I have now ordered several types. I had no idea there was quite a range. Yours is beyond pretty, I really see the draw. What cute quixotic flowers they are!

Have you tried Kool Logs for your masdies? I use them for my 2 species masdies and they work really well for me.

When I last had them, I was going through a bad economic time with no job. I could not afford things like that. Since I live in a warm area, all my orchids now are warm growing and they love it.

Omg that's brilliant, why have I never seen these before? Thanks wintergirl for the tip. I lost a masdevallia this summer feel so bad but maybe I'll try growing one on a Kool Log.

Where do you get them? I mean the cool logs. If I love my new masdies, I may get some cooler types.

Kool-Logs

My first masdie was fine until the bad summer heat hit. It was indoors but it still got warm. I ordered a Kool log and when I mounted it there were only 2 leaves left. Since then I have new roots and a new leaf shoot. It has done so well I bought another species masdie and a kool log for it. I just fill the log with distilled water every morning. When it was hot I went through a lot of water, now it's less but they still use it.

Did you tie a layer of sphagnum between the plant and the Kool-Log, or did you attach the plant directly to the Kool-Log,, or did you attach the plant and then tie sphagnum over the roots?

They give you instructions on how to mount when you buy the log. I put a small pad of spagh moss on the log then I placed the root area on pad. The leaves I left out and away from the log and growing upwards. Then I covered the root area with more moss. I used fishing line. It was easy and has stayed nice since I mounted it about 2.5 months ago.
