Default Masdevallia amabilis

For years I wondered why this one didn't flower for me. It had flowered once in the first year, then done nothing for years.

Well if flowered in September with a flower that lasted till January, then as the first was closing it opened a second which is still open. As hubby took these pictures for me I noticed another 4 spikes growing

That's a nice one. Love the stripes. What did you do different that caused it to bloom?

Thanks Bill,

That's the odd thing, I don't remember changing anything. It's sat in exactly the same spot in the greenhouse for years. 18 months ago I switched fertiliser but my other masdies were happy before the switch. It was growing well and has probably quadrupled (or more) in size since bought. I wonder if it just needed to be bigger, though it flowered in the first year so that doesn't seem right.

Lovely!

If your winter was more intense as ours was this year, perhaps the temps got a bit cooler?

Nice one! Glad you got it to bloom, even if you aren't sure why. Enjoy it!

Actually just the opposite, we've had a very mild winter, and the flowering started before that anyway. However we did have a cool summer to, so maybe that's it.
