I use moss... but by the time I'm removing it there is very little left as the roots push it out the way (not sure where it goes though... must just compact which is why I always remove all I can).

Wow!!! Incredible root systems, mine thrive but have never been that happy and root-bound.

I use moss too - I've always been told it's the best medium for these. Over time, it breaks down and disintegrates.

I remember reading on one forum or another that Draculas and Masdevallia root systems are abbreviated because they shouldn't need an expansive root system as they should be constantly wet negating the purpose of many roots required to absorb water.

It is my opinion that the paradox you thought of; "whether the roots cause a bigger plant or the bigger plant causes the roots". It is the roots responsible for the bigger plant. Greater surface area means more nutrients can be utilized, gas exchanges on larger scale, and you don't have to keep it constantly wet.

Thanks everyone!

I'm going to get a picture of this orchid in my greenhouse next to my other masdies. I took one of my new greenhouse shelving last night and when looking at it later realised how this veitchianna looks like a mother hen with all her chicks... massive masdie with all the little (standard size) ones around it

Nice! I've also found that masdies do great in clay pots and moss. I especially like the hokey clay pots. This is the first year I've used the clay pots and the 2 masdies are FINALLY thriving!
