I've been admiring the Masdie veitches for quite some time. This one was in bloom when it followed me home on the POS greenhouse tour.

Masdevallia veitchiana 'Al Smith', AM/AOS | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

After a week of admiring the bloom indoors, I put it out with my ferns as it's a cool grower. A raccoon pulled it out of the pot and broke the bloom stem. Fortunately rest of plant recovered and it has another bud. When it's done blooming , I'll try outdoors again. Seems like our local raccoon likes bright colors. S/he left the small potted ferns alone.

That is a gorgeous flower. I love the monochromatic shade of the petals and a sharp break of color on the lower portion. The vibrant color, texture and form gives it a very festive mood. I am not that lucky: I have never had blooms from any of my Masdies....Good growing!

Gorgeous! The raccoon had good taste!

The little devils have been draining and wrecking my hummingbird feeders for a few years too. Maybe it's because they are colourful, but I think its the sugar water!

Probably hungry raccoons and hummingbirds. I like the hummingbirds better. They're too small to break anything and cute as ever.

Very pretty. Oops about the raccoon. They are very pesky little buggers, not the cute furry animals that we see as stuffed toys.
