Rather Large Masdevallia Planter

you need a large planter for LARGE plants




thats the Fire Queen and my hand. I think theres lot of spikes on the way. In fact all of these have spikes.

WOW! you have happy healthy plants, lush and green...your masdies are large...I guess mine are miniatures or they are seedlings...small wonder they are not blooming on me

you dont have miniatures.

I was thinking the same thing of all my 'mini' masdys, but these have to be old plants of the larger growing primary hybrids heathii, and huayna pichu, a species veitchiana, and the fire queen is a hybrid of several of the larger growing hybrids. Those 4 inch pots are stuffed with plant. I was not expecting plants that topped 18+ inches from base to leaf tip. I didn't know masdys that got that big. Learn something new everyday.

Oh dear...so my masdies are not miniatures they are all seedlings(they are 5 inches leaves...species I got from Ecuagenera)...it will take a couple more years before it will bloom(you have 12 to 18 inches leaves)...its good to know what a real mature flowering masdie plant looks like.

for now I do.. soon it will be much too hot for even the warmest tolerant plants. they like going inside to the coolness at night. during the day they stay outside in the shade for most of the day. the leaves get rather flat and listless from the heat. at night they perk right up as long as I do not let them get dried out. they get water in the am and water in the pm, and water in between if they need it. got to keep them moistened up.

these arent the minis for sure most Ive seen are very small. I dont think whether or not the plant is large makes a difference as whether one will bloom. IMO the overall health and plant size makes are larger more robust colored flowers. They need lots of light to bloom out. everything Ive read has told they need plenty of light to bloom. Of course we have a few who could bloom them in a dark room but thats them. mine need light and I bet yours need more light too. The trouble with the more light when you have a cool growing plant is to keep it cool while you are giving it more light. you can get them to grow without so much light but you wont get the blooms you bought them for. They all have spikes now after checking today. . We see how they look soon enough. The blooms from spike to bud take a long time for the size of the flowers. Maybe a month or 2 from spike setting at the base of the leaves.

I have two Masdies thats supposed to grow as big as those: Masdevallia Morning Glory and Masdevalia Prince Charming
But I have miniatures too:
Masdevallia herradurae and Masdevallia vidua

now I know...the hybrids I have will need to grow as big as your plants but the species are supposed to bloom for me soon...
