Masdevallia NOID
I was at the grocery store yesterday and saw this on the shelf next to some other potted plants with no price tag or ID, but I had to have it, so into the cart it went, the price ended up to be what I thought was very cheap,$12.00, does anyone have any idea to its ID? Does it have any special care needs? I live in Southern Calif.

Thank you all for the comments, they also had a Paph Maudi but I was short on cash or I would have bought that one too, I went there for food not orchids. I'm still looking for some care info, I am assuming it will grow in my conditions or the grocery store would not have had it for sale, right?

It looks like a hybrid of Masdevallia veitchiana or even possibly the species itself. Either way, it's a heck of a bargain! I have a M. veitchiana ready to open and will post a picture so you can compare.
As far as culture goes, it is a relatively cool grower, and should never dry out completely. It would probably thrive next to a swamp cooler. I grow very similar plants outdoors year-round here in San Jose, protected from rain and frost, of course.
Great Buy!
Regards,
Rick

You found that WHERE!! For how much!! Actually the price is not bad at all. A few dollars lower than you would probably find it on line. Good find. May your luck continue.

I wish they have orchids like that here in the UK Supermarkets! Well done on your lucky find.

Ditto! The choice of chids in our supermarkets is limited to say the least! And not at that price either!
