M. strobelii has a flower size of 1 to 1 1/2" [2 to 4 cm], M. sotoana of 1/2" [1 cm]. M. strobelii is found at lower elevations than M. sotoana and has a more restricted range. M. strobelii has less erect flower spikes and flowers that are less tubular and the plant is larger by several cms. If you saw them side by side you would not mistake them.
