Dracula inequalis - anyone growing it?
Default Dracula inequalis - anyone growing it?

I ordered a bunch of orchids and the seller sent me a bonus plant, Dracula inequalis! I looked it up in the orchid digest special supplement on the genus Dracula and it says that it generally grows from 400-800 m.a.s.l.. In Nepenthes growing this meant the plant was a warm/hot growing lowlander. Does this also translate for orchids growing temps, especially this Dracula? I ask because I always assumed all Dracs were cool/cold growing but it would be cool to be able to keep it.

Hi, Swords
I've been growing Dracula inequallis for a long time (five or six years now) and I guess it does well in intermediate to warm conditions. I would note that it benefits of some months of cold weather. Not all Drac are cool growers. Drac. cordobae, Drac astuta and a few others can perfectly be grown in relatively warm conditions provided some months of cold weather in winter. If I can be of further help, please don't hesitate and just let me know.
Mauro

can you define "some months in colder weather"? How much cooler than room temp (65-80*F throughout the year) does it need to be? I'm not setting up a chamber which will be cooled so I'm going to be keeping it basically at ambient room temps (but 80-90% RH). I might have to swap this plant for a more temp appropriate plant for my setup.

Sorry my lack of precision. Cold months (around 3 months during the year) for this species can be though of as day time temps not higher than 75F and night time temps between 59F and 64F. Good air movement and pure (RO) water are also keys with Dracs and Masdies as you know.

Thanks for your input! I'll see how the plant behaves for a while, if it seems to be doing poorly I won't include it in the final setting and find a new home for it.
