I have no first hand experience, just heard it was difficult. Probably because it is a cold growing terrestrial that in the wilde grows on sides of rocky cliffs, according to this link:

It's gorgeous and I hope you get to bloom it

Thanks for the head up, Tin! I will keep a close eye on it. It is quite a bit larger than my other Masdies - leaves are around 8in long, some even bigger. Cold is no problem here... temps rarely get above the mid-20s celcius here in summer - they've been no where near that this summer!!
I've not idea which colour form I've got... but any one of the ones I've seen will make me happy.

Nice plants, I'll be looking forward to see pictures, especially the ignea cross.
From what I've heart M. coccinea is called "difficult" because it demands cool temperatures. 'Don't know how cool "cool" is but it shoulder be somewhat colder than intermediate.
I have also bought M. coccinea recently . An alba and a normal. I am of course curious to see which one that blooms first .
Seems like the plants are enjoying the chilly weather in northern Europe.
Regards from Denmark

Hi there! Yes, I expect they are having a good time this summer... we have been lucky when the temps have got as high as 20C/70F the past few months.
I'm so glad to hear you've got M. coccinea as well... we can compare notes!
Yes, it will be interesting to see which flower first... and when I can get mine to flower as well.
The temps I can provide only just make it into the intermediate range - and that is where I grow my Encyclia and Brassia. All of the Pleurothallids are in a different room that is definitely in the 'cool' range 10C-20C, window open all year 'round providing cooling as well as fresh air circulation.
Fingers crossed, I will see something on the ignea cross one soon!
All the best from 'sunny' England!

Actually, I think it's a great idea to compare our plants, growing conditions etc. because we live relatively close, and in the same climate, which should mean equal conditions, so yes seriously!
In Denmark nobody are growing Masd. in vivs and etc. so I feel a bit odd!
But remember that I have only grown orchids for a very short period.
I forgot to tell that all my masdies are from UK, from an orchid show in London Actually a bit funny.
I would like to hear more from you, but maybe we should continue in mail or private messages? don't know
I think its a great opportunity to learn more about how to grow these gems.

I would love to do this, I think it would be so helpful for both of us. I don't have any complex set up... I just tried to pick the orchids that would be most suited to the general climate. I was lucky that the Pleurothallids caught my eye - and now I'm hooked!
I'll send you an email, so that you have my address, and we can continue that way if you like.
