My first paph i got in bud at the same time is opening right now too! It has a second bud on the same spike as well. And I have a Phal equestris 'three times a lady' x 'too blue' in bloom. And with a few buds open, I have two white noids, one is a dinner plate and one is a smaller star shaped cutie. I have another medium sized white noid Phal that should open soon, and a sedirea japonica, in bud. A Phal I-hsin sunflower in spike. And the mass in the above post is developing another spike.
Sadly, my nice big encyclia tampensis got put outside and then it got too cold one night. So I think I killed it , it was in sheath too

Can't wait to see pics. Congrats! I know what it feels like to finally to not kill something, let alone finally get it to bloom.

I love it! I'm in heaven right now. I bloomed other things, but this is the first "difficult" orchid I've ever had success with.

Just as Bob said. It's when the bud dies before opening.
It can be caused by all sorts of things, in masdies I've heard too low humidity and too warm can be causes. In Phals and probably others it can just be caused by a change in enviroment (even if both enviroments are fine for it, just the change at the wrong time on the buds can cause it).
It can also be caused by root problems or other problems, but some genuses are more sensetive and can blast without any real longer term problems.
