Thanks Camille,
I'll give one more try next week to getting hold of it from the UK supplier (a dart frog shop) and if I'm still having problems I'll let you know.
They have never answered the phone when I tried, but I discovered last week that they only open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (I'm sure I tried on Mondays because that's when I usually remember after a weekend with my orchids ) and having forgotten to call on Tuesday they had an extra shutdown Thursday and Today, that's been on their website a while

A mix 50/50 small glass-wool cubes and small expansed clay balls run very well for me for the Masdies culture. in plastic pots. I use also a mix medium bark/sphagnum and perlite in clay pots.

I have been using a good quality CHC on its own for over a year now and having good success with it, the roots are looking great. I have all my Massies in husk, including approx 130 species, i have no plans changing.

So I have two new Masdie's and I just noticed that the flower bud that was developing when I bought it is turning yellow and dying as of two days ago. It came shipped in sphag, but i removed it in favor of an Oncidium/Seedling mix from RePotme.com. This morning I noticed that one of the leaves on my other masdie (the one without the flower bud) had dried and died.
I'm now thinking I should repot them in sphag based upon this information. My question is how tightly do you guys pack them with sphag? I have no experience with potting with sphag, and the one attempt I did have I think I did it too light as the medium dried out quickly and I lost my phal.

I like to moisten the sphagnum before potting. I like to pot "just tight enough" to hold the plant upright without it wobbling. If you choose to pot in clay, you can form a wire "ring" that clips onto the pot and serves to hold the plant in place while the roots get well established. It is very important that the plant does not move relative to the mix.
It is absolutely critical to pot at the right level - all the roots should be in the medium, and the base of the newest growths should be touching the medium but not buried.
Be sure that whatever you pot in stays moist but that it starts to approach drying in between waterings. Be sure to use good water (ie rainwater, distilled water or RO water).
Good luck!

Same here, replacing with sphagnum tonight and will start using distiller as opposed to tap water. Thank you!

I have read if the crowns are even slightly buried, the new growths will die. Also if it is too dry they can't get out of their little sheaths. They are very sensitive to high pH too I think.
