Masdev bloom
1 Attachment(s)
Hi Rosie
Very pretty... I have managed to get my first flower as well...but the flower is not perfect. It's a bit lopsided unless it just takes a bit more time to open more. Here's a photo with some other blooms. Cheers John |

Very nice for a first Masdevallia !!!

Thanks everyone
A slug or something has taken a very slight nibble overnight  but it's only slight and I'm still so pleased I've succedded with this. Now just got to get the amabilis healthy enough to flower (it's doing OK, just there were only a few good roots when I got it, though I can see it's put out more and new shoots this year). I really thought I would struggle with Masdies but it seems that even when this cool growing veitchianna was in the house last winter (in the coolest spot I could find next to a part open window) it liked me and grew well, now it's in my greenhouse and has almost doubled in size over the summer and is now flowering. Growth of any sort makes you feel you must be doing something right... but flowers are even better :cloud9: |

:cheer: Well done you!
And those Photos are fantastic also! |
Hi Rosie
Thanks for that. The Coelogynes are Flaccida, Unchained Melody (alba) and Cristata. Nice to have spring here i tell you! Cheers John |
Fantastic Rosie - what a gorgeous bloom!

Congratulations Rosie! Way to go!!! :)
I lost my first Masdie. I think the mineral content at my school and the high temps the first couple months in my dorm room were too much for it. Then I left it with my parents in a better environment, but they couldn't take care of it properly. I'll definitely be trying Masdies again someday, but not until I'm out of school and settled down somewhere. lol |
Thanks everyone!
Evan... water quality and temps are a big thing for these. I set up my greenhouse with Masdies in mind and I got a rainwater collection set up for them as well. Another tip I got here on OB was to pot them porus clay, the evaporation from the clay causes it to cool, so as long as they are damp on hot days their roots will stay cooler and they are happy that way. It seems to be working as the two I have seem to be doing well. |
