Default Is this a normal bud colour on my Masda veitchianna?

The last bud on my Masda veitchianna blasted over the summer. This one has got a LOT further through development but is now turning a red/brown colour.

Now I know that as this orchid has red flowers it could just be normal colour change in the bud but I can't help worrying. (I'm sure you can tell that this hasn't flowered for me before)

So.. does this look normal?

The last one didn't even get as far as the bud emerging from the little sheath just behind it in this pic so I'm getting really nervous about this one.

... Oh yeah... and the second pic is showing (if you look closely) that there is another spike starting

looks fine! Unless it's gone brown and falls off I wouldn't touch it!

Could be a dark red or orange Bloom still opening!

Thanks Michael,

veitchianna does have a dark red flower so I'm hoping that's what I'm seeing starting to form.

Now I am curious too, did it bloom or blast? I don't have a masdie yet (2 on order), one a veitchianna. but the picture of the bud looked OK and not shrivelled.

Sorry guys, forgot to come back to update this thread.

It bloomed and for a while I had it as my avatar. It's still open now and I have a second bud at about the stage this one was at in the pictures.

Here is a link to the thread where I posted pictures of the bloom.

If I remember, I think seeing yours on the other post is what inspired me to order one. I was choosing several orchids from Ecuagenera in Ecuador as they are coming to Canada in Oct. So our society has placed an order. I ordered 2 Masdies, this one and Machu Pichu which has some coccinea and ayabacana in it. It's easy to keep our greenhouse cool enough in winter but the heat can build up in summer as we get very warm sunny summers. But I will try your trick of planting in a clay pot and keep it low near the floor in the summer. The greenhouse does have an inground cooling system and is heated with an energy efficient furnace and is attached to our home.
