Masdevallia Kimballiana
(Masdevallia caudata x Masdevallia veitchiana)
I bought this in bloom at the London Orchid Show back in March, and after putting out quite a bit of new growth, it's decided to start blooming again. After I took this photo I found more spikes on the way...
Enjoy!
Kay

Wow, nice colour combo. I love the orange yellow with the darker yellow stripes. Looks kinda hairy, is it? A real beauty, congrats.

Really love this. I can see the veitchianna influence in it.
How do you grow it, and do you alter the conditions at all when it's budding. My veichianna sent out a bud in June but it started withering away in July (the spike was about 15cm but the bud was just tiny hardly formed). It's now got another spike and tiny bud at about the size the last one got to, and I'm wondering if there is anything I should do to keep it happy at this point. (The plant grows really well, masses of new leaves and roots this year).

Thanks so much all! So pleased you like it!!
Rosie,
I had 2 buds blast on me when I first had this plant. I think it was due to a combo of too much light, and a higher temp. This plant now grows in an East-facing window box (obviously, outside) It gets direct sunlight until 8am, but partial shade after, and full shade after 11.30am. This way it seems to have withstood even the heatwave earlier this summer. I think that's mainly to do with lots of air movement while outside, and very high humidity- I get well over 80% over night, and often closer to the high 90s.
I water with de-ionized water, and very lightly feed. I hope that helps!

Thanks Kaykay,
I wonder if the light might be too much for mine. It's in my greenhouse and gets light all day although it's comes through a shade cloth in the morning, and direct light is blocked by the neighbours house from arround 11am.
It gets lots of air movement and is in a clay pot to help keep it cool. Hmm... I might move it to the other side of the green house which is more shaded in the morning by a fence and see how it does.
Thanks for the info.

Rosie,
Maybe it is the light, but I'd also double check the temperature your greenhouse can reach on a sunny day. (As a disclaimer, although I'm suggesting that, I do no almost nothing about greenhouse growing, not having one myself!)
I'm sure that your veitchiana will bloom happily for you soon- good growth and roots are always a good sign!!

Thanks Kaykay.
I do have a min/max thermomiter in there and it's not getting that high. The door is open constantly at the momment and there is an automatic roof vent. There is a strong breeze most of the time from the direction of the door which gives a lot of air movement in the greenhouse.
This spike is still growing just now so hopefully it will keep doing I can also see signs at the base of another leaf of a potential spike... I've seen these stay that way a long time before but it's still good news
