It doesn't matter what you use in the inner pot. In my case, I use sphagnum for most of my plants, so yes - moss works. Any other appropriate medium would work, too. I set the bottom of the inner pot right against the bottom of the clay "sleeve" pot. I enlarge the drain hole of the clay pot with a nail and hammer - I'm not sure it's necessary, but I enjoy doing it. I'm growing some Restrepias this way in a very warm and very bright greenhouse (It's a research greenhouse for tomatoes and rice, if that helps paint the picture) right now and they're doing great. They are putting on lots of strong new growth and blooming well. With the high temps and strong light the blooms don't last long during the summer, but this fall they should be spectacular!

Also look at the evaporative pots here.

Or if interested PM me, my wife makes something very similar for me in her pottery studio

Thanks Duane and John.

Interesting about the Restrepias as well as I have just bought one of those and have NO idea how to care for it (planning on starting another thread to ask about that).

I think I really need to try this out to grow both Masdas and Restrepias.
