I'm not familiar with Masdevallia bucculata and have no reference point to judge the flower. I did find a picture on ISOPE of Mas. bucculenta and it looks like this:

It doesn't look like the same thing....Is your flower open?

I agree that is something weird...It's the first blooming? If not (and the previuous were OK), it can be a somatic mutation, and you lose the bud but not the plant. In the case of first blooming, may be the orchid has a genetic problem. I had a Cattleya hybrid that all blooms were defective.

I can barely make out what it is, but it looks to be a very immature bud. Sometimes, if the Pleurothallid was recently shipped or imported, the first blooming in cultivation can yield messed up flowers. It usually doesn't occur again after that. I guess just give it some time and proper conditions

Sorry everyone - as per usual late night (for me) on the board & not totally thinking clearly. I really shouldn't surf the board at this time but just before bedtime is the only time I have.

OK here are some answers:
Tindo - Yep this is a closed bud
Phantasm - Yes that is the right plant
Frdemetr - No this isn't the first bloom. It was in bloom when I bought it, I burnt the second bud & trying to shade this one a little better hoping not to burn it again

Should have mentioned that this was a closed bud. Of course the pic doesn't show how gooey the bud looks, just how deformed.

But it was just tooo weird to not post

The pic is hard to see clearly, but it seems like the bud is fine, or the bud is slightly deformed due to a cultural condition...
