I was in Peru and visited Machu Pichu in 1984. It is one of the most amazing places I have ever been. I understand it has gone from being rustic to somewhat comfortable when I was there (we stayed in Cuzco) to crawling with tourists now. Still, I hope to get back there one more time.

Marilyn, Congratulations! Although I like Masdies very much, I cannot have them since they do not like to sit right next to my Vandas..... I don't have 'cool' growing setup.

Connie, we also stayed in Cuzco but I would not call it comfortable. There certainly were not many people there. There were only two other people on the mountain. I'm glad I went because it was breath taking, but I wouldn't go again unless there would be some improvements.

The 'Hotel' didn't have locks on the doors, only a bent nail, the beds were very short, not long enough for us to strech out, with a sheet only over the center 1/3rd of the mattress....which was very stained. No bathroom so I guess wetting the bed would be the only option. There was a toilet???? on the first floor, more like an outhouse.

There was no other place to eat so we had to eat there......they only changed the table cloth and napkins one a week. The cooks apron was black, possibly he didn't change it that week.

Did you need to take that tiny (4 seater) plane from Lima to Cuzco .....and land on that short runway on top of a mountain?

I do remember many different flowers growing wild there. I wish I had been more into orchids when I was there. There were also many orchids (we were told they were orchids) in Brazil, growing along the mountain sides. Like they say, too late smart.

Marilyn

Well I was there in 1984 and we stayed in a pretty nice hotel in Cuzco. It was like a fortress tho. The poverty was extreme. We got there on a jet from Lima and jetted from there to Puerto Maldonado. What I remember most was the altitude in Cuzco- it made us both sick. We took a train from Cuzco to Aguas Caliente and then a bus up the switchback road to Machu Pichu.
My husband works regularly in Peru (he constructs canopy bridges and platforms in the rainforests) but I have never gotten back there.
I do remember seeing some lovely orchids there, but well before I was into them.
Machu Pichu is about the most amazing place that I have ever been.
