Paul, I think others aren't "getting it!" We have the wrong temps over the year to do very well with Masdie's. I am on your side. I have a Maxillaria that does sort of OK, but no biggie - no blossoms. Masdie's are out for me. And my temps may be a bit cooler than yours (by a degree or two.)

Ross/Paul, I understand completely about having the wrong temps for things.... For example, I really struggle to keep some of my Phals alive - its just not warm enough for them here. Anytime anyone suggests something that grows best with even a hint of warm conditions, I know its not right for me, though I have given some a go with mixed success. The highest, high temp this week in the middle of summer is 19C/66F, most days it is 17C/63F. So for me, even 'Intermediate' conditions are sometimes a stretch!

Makes your accomplishment with this Masdie all the more impressive!

Shakkai, I am now interested to know what the average temp or your coldest month is. Does this mean you grow Masdies and other cool growing species?

Tin, In order to not hijack the thread, I've created my response here: Average temps/growing conditions

Good work Paul.

How does that saying go....

Way to go, Paul!

I know what you mean about wanting the cooler grower because of the intense colors they get. I have found that Masd zahlbruckneri grew well for me...it's dead now but I take the credit for that one

I was able to find "warm-growing" Masdies at I.N. Komoda Orchids. They haven't bloomed yet, haven't had them for very long and most of them were in compots but they are all doing much better than I was expecting!
One of the group came to me in bud and those blooms lasted for weeks.

I. N. KOMODA ORCHIDS

If you have any questions, email them. I was in contact with Ivan Komoda with lots of questions before we placed our order and he was a very very nice man
All the plants we ordered, including Miltonia were top-notch quality too.

Glad to hear you liked them Sue! That makes me feel better about possibly ordering from them in the future.

I really really liked them!
Ivan was so helpful and patient with me and the plants are outstanding. You know I always repot everything on arrival and I found every one of the plants in perfect condition.

I have a Restrepia in a north kitchen window right over the sink. It is very happy there and blooms almost continuously. So I bought a Masdie too. Now I have to check and see if it is a hybrid. I am sure it is fine right now, since Hausermann's still has custody.
