Two years ago, I passed this up at Hausermann's. It was a much bigger plant but, unknown to me. Roberta admonished me. Dr. Rob at Littlefrog talked me into this one. I can't take credit as it was in low bud when I bought it.

It's my understanding that they should never dry out, like phal level light, and like a Yucca, the mother dies and produces pups.

You have it right! When the old growth starts to die back, the new ones are right behind so there is no dormancy. So damp and on the shady side.

Very cool! I just got mine in the mail today and it’s potted in coarse bark so I’m thinking I’ll have to move it to something finer ASAP.

I don’t know how much variation there is in these. I ordered mine from Seattle Orchids and the photo on their website matches your plant and the tag says Vanguard, but mine is a dead ringer for Stenorrhynchos speciosum.

Aliceinwl, yes, the web search I just did was confusing. But, the plant I originally passed by at Hausermann's was speciosum. The foliage was highly spotted, and darker green. It was very different from this and much more attractive, in my opinion. Good luck ferreting it out. I won't be much help.
