Macrophotography article on Orchid Digest

My article on imaging small orchid flowers just got published in the Orchid Digest July-August issue, including front and back covers. It discusses imaging from life size to about 40x mag, including z-stacking, both with SLR as well as stereomicroscope. On the higher mag shots you can count the cells in the flowers. It is moderately technical, with details of effective f-stop, maximum advantageous f-stop, airy discs, and diffraction blur.

Thanks everybody! Yep, the covers are nice touches, the front has an Oberonia (my favorites) which have about 1-1.5 mm flowers; I think it is O. cf. patentifolia, which I originally obtained misidentified as O. surigaensis. I also smuggled in images of Oberonia leytensis (obtained misidentified a O. iridifolia) and O. cavaleriei (obtained with the wrong name O. myosurus).

The back cover has an inflorescence of Bulbophyllum flaviflorum (where I screwed up, the caption reads B. flavescens; Ron Parsons caught that one, but was too late). Oh well. Next time it will be prefect ;-)

Gave a talk on that topic at the Maria Selby Botanical Garden in Sarasota, and I think people liked it. Spent a week there using the library and working in the herbarium. Lots of fun.

Even after I don't know how many articles and four books out, it is still thrilling to see work published, particularly in a newer field. Next botanical one should be in AOS Orchids in fall (on misidentified Oberonias) or in the CSA Journal (Systematics 101 part 2). Another one on Z-stacking is coming out in PhotoTechniques later this year; just got the proofs last week.
