Default User ratings for a Canon SX 40 IS

For the past 5 years I've been using a Nikon Coolpix 7600. It's been a good little camera but lately the shutter's been sticking and there's a piece broken from the battery door. The shutter was an easy fix if I flicked it with my finger. The battery door has been a pain. For a while it worked if I taped it shut, but lately even after taping, the camera gives me exhausted battery messages with fresh batteries installed.

I'm in the market for a new camera with upgrades, but I don't have the budget or skill for a DLSR. Relatively new on the market is the Canon SX 40 IS. It has many nice features and so far the customer reviews have far surpassed it's former version SX 30 IS. Do any of you own the Canon SX 40 IS, and if so, what are your opinions? Thanks.

I've not tried one I'm afraid, so really just giving you a bump.

However I've always liked Canon in general and the specs of the SX 40 IS do look pretty good.

I don't know this model, but I know that Canon makes some of the best compact cameras.
You may want to check Canon PowerShot SX40 HS: Digital Photography Review . DPReview is for cameras what OrchidBoard is for orchids

I'm not familiar with that model, but recently got the Powershot SX30 IS and I really like it. Still learning all that it can do, but the macro is great and I really like that you can take photos on full manual if you want. Pretty decent video as well. Can't go too far wrong with Canon.
Cheers,
Tony

I appreciate your responses. I had already read the reviews but thought It would be wise to check with you guys first. The SX30 IS had good reviews, but there were several complaints about the quality of low light photos and that concerned me. Supposedly Canon worked out the lighting issues with the newer version SX40. I've experienced low light grain with my Nikon 7600. Since the Nikon is about worn out I thought I'd spend a little extra on a nicer well rounded camera that covers close-ups, indoors without a supplemental flash, and panoramic views. The SX40 sounds promising for someone with a basic skill level, like me. Thanks again.

with these cameras its more important to have a good tripod that doesn't wiggle around. either Nikon or Canon in the price range are great all around cameras for the money per megapixel.

Our only local and remaining photolab and camera shop sells only Canon cameras in this range (including the sx40) because they are rated the highest. As to the low light issue, the newer cameras are better with that, but it's more of light issue than a camera issue.
