GPS Data logger - Orchid Board

Hello,
I have Canon 7 D DSLR Camera and leaving for a trip to India/may be to Taiwan.
I need to know if any one of you use GPS Data logger and any information is appreciated.

Does that camera have gps picture location? I know that the newer gps have camera and record the location where the shot was taken. Anyway I don't use data logger but I do upload my tracks and waypoints to Google earth.

Thanks for the reply,I do not think canon 7D DSLR Camera has any picture location system on it.

Sorry I can't help with the question but I am interested in getting a camera. Is canon 7D DSLR a good one?

I think it is a very good camera you have to read the manual carefully and use frequently till you master the camera.

First, what do you want from a camera? Only after you identified you needs/wants you can start wondering whether a given camera is a "good one". For superb images, 7D is not the best choice, as it has an APC format sensor, not full frame. But a 5DmkII or a 1Ds is useless if you want to carry the camera with lens in your shirt pocket. Then a compact camera is more suitable.

Second, the lens is more important in taking images than the camera body. Think about what images you want to take (flowers, I presume), how big and particularly how small the flowers are, and consider macro-lenses. Then check which macros you can attach to which body.

Last but not least, there is no one single best cameras/lens. Eventually, people will get multiple systems for various applications. I run the gamut from cell phone for snap shots, to compact camera for slightly better snaps, to SLR, to dedicated microscope camera with color filter wheel on two microscopes, to large format camera. Don't get me started on lenses ...

So match your wants/needs to the equipment, not the other way around. The equipment has to be at your service, your are not a slave to the camera.

There is a GPS unit for at least some canon cameras, but IMHO, its clunky. I have heard of people who use the time signature on a GPS unit and run a track, sync that with the time signature on the camera, and then cross reference the GPS coordinates & time with time-on-image, which gives you GPS of image.

Nice theory, but sounds like a hassle to implement. I would certainly first check whether it works at home.

I use either GPS names waypoints, or do it old-fashioned with writing down GPS coords on paper with image numbers (pencil, of course, as it does not smudge).

I do it manually with Picasa/Google Earth once the pictures are on the PC. It's all a matter of me remembering where they were taken.

The system of cross referencing the picture time and a GPS coordinates & time thing can be done I believe if you have the right software. It probably needs the right GPS unit that can output the right info, but the software then takes the pictures and the GPS info and does all the work for you. Well that's what I've read, but I've never tried it.

I completely agree with what tropterrarium has said about choosing a camera.

I have the Cannon 60D which is the model down from the 7D. For my purposes and camera experience the 7D did not add enough features, and actually had some (minor) downsides compared to the 60D, so was not worth the extra cost. If I was more experienced and thought I could make use of the extra features I might have gone for it, and in the future I may upgrade (only had this one a couple of months though so not quite yet.

But the lenses are far more important once you are in the SLR market. A college has the 450D and he sees my hubby's pictures and is talking about upgrading to the 60D. However his lenses are also bottom end lenses while ours are high end lenses. Hubby and I are thinking he may still be disappointed if he upgrades the camera, because the lenses he has will still not be able to produce the low light colour depth he is admiring from our shots, or the clarity of image we get even after cropping down a long way. The quality of the 'glass' on your camera is very important for good shots.

But then there is convenience and that can't be underestimated. We still carry a pretty good Cannon Powershot compact for slipping in a pocket and grabbing those quick shots.

As you say Rosie, the quality of the lens is probably a bigger difference (and possibly technique) between your shots and your friends, rather than the model!

I'm pretty sure I've seen software out there that matches the timestamp on your photo with a GPS track log. I imagine a quick google will find something
