Default New Camera

Just purchased the new Canon 7D - what a fabulous camera. Had a Rebel XT, but this is in a different class altogether. Have posted a photo taken with it in the Cymbidium group and there are a couple of others on my Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ronaldhanko/.

Sweet camera man! Have fun with it!

I'm not sure what my next body will be, either a 7D or a 1D MkIII or 5D MkII. Too many choices and too many things I like to shoot. Orchids only being one of them. But for now my 40D serves me well.

1 - It's larger and heavier, built like a tank, in fact. For some this might be a liability, but I have large hands and this camera feels much more comfortable and for backpacking is much more durable.
2 - It has a self-cleaning sensor that cleans itself every time the camera is turned on or off - a very valuable feature to me, since I do a lot of lens changing.
3 - It has video capability, though the T1L has that also.
4 - It has an 18 mp sensor - I am taking pictures with a minimum of noise at ISO speeds over 1000.
5 - It has a dial in place of the ring of buttons that my old XT had - much easier to use.
6 - It has a much larger LCD screen, which my old eyes need.
7 - It has a Quick menu button that in connection with the dial and a joystick make it much easier to change settings.
8 - It has a one-touch RAW button that allows you to select Raw for a picture without going to the menus.

All adds up (for me) to three things - much easier to use, feels great and takes superb pictures.

Hope that helps.

The 7D is lightyears ahead of the rebel XT series of cameras. In addition to the features listed above by Ron, the 7D also has a high burst rate of over 8 FPS. Not a feature that you might use when shooting orchids, but the 7D is a great sports body. It also has new focusing sensors as well as some of the features from the 1D series cameras. The expanded focus sensors increases the keeper rate quite a bit! It is still a 1.6 x crop body, but some folks really like that.

Hey Ron, put a battery grip and a 24-70 f2.8L on that 7D and then tell me how you like it! I too have larger hands and need a grip on my 40D. And when I throw the 24-70L (otherwise known as "The Brick") on my body it becomes a very heavy camera. Again, that's not always a bad thing, I shot three frames of my son the other day with only ISO 100 and distant North window light at f2.8 and 1/15 and 1/20. All three were sharp! Because of the wieght, it doesn't allow you to shake much and over force the camera.

Hi Chas,
It's a great camera, as you say, light years ahead of the XT. I did a lot of research before spending the money - had to be convinced that some of the carping was just that, but am so pleased. It is by far and away the best camera I've owned and I've had the same experience as you - can shoot at much slower speeds when I had trouble shooting at anything below 1/60 even with a is lens.

Hey Ron. I was just on Flickr and noticed your bird Junco and thought what a nice shot. Now I see this older, Jan post, I didn't check but I imagine you shot it with this camera. Anyway beautiful pictures, as always.
Peace.

Hi Swamper - I assume your talking about the photo of the new camera - that was one of the last photos I took with my old camera, an EOS Rebel XT.

Although the camera shot is nice, I was actually talking about an actual bird. It's called a Junco oreganis or is it anus? You have another beauty or two of a downy woodpecker.
