Oh, I'm not saying that Canon will never abandon the EF mount system. Someday they will, just like they abandoned the FD mount. But I bet they will continue the EOS EF system for a good long while until there is a huge breakthrough in tech and design.
If it were me, I'd read that manual for that camera. The HD video capture mode is a really, really nice tool to have available to you. I don't own one so I can't tell you how to do it. I have though opperated one, but only after someone set it up for me. I know it's a function of the Live View feature and it does time out after a while. Some silly sleep mode that usually drives people nuts. I say keep trying it and read the manual. It's a really cool feature and would be a shame to not be able to use it.
