Photography Lighting Basics - any tips?

I have a temporary set up similar to Ross' A recent challenge, however, was to try and get the details in the throat which was dark purple. No arrangement of lights did it so the details were lost.
Ideas?
(use a MicroNikor 105 mm lens on a Nikon D60)

They make lights for this purpose called "snoots" - long and thin. But I've also used a small flashlight or led light with some success. With light colors you can light from behind, but dark purple will be a challenge for sure.
