Saved a Kitten?

I was driving home from the dog park when I noticed in the other lane a pile of fur, not moving. I hate the Idea of dead animals being squished under car wheels, so I stopped the car and was about to move it to the side of the road. I had this sense that it was still alive, so I scooped it up and put it in my coat, not thinking of blood or guts.

One I got out of traffic, I saw it was a tortois shell kitten, maybe 6 weeks old. It was in a total coma, but alive.

I found it (her) on the 12/24. I put her in a fish tank with a heating pad. She pooped major stinky poop, so I figured it was a sign she was dying. 12/25 she pooped some blood. Still in a coma, but her tail twitched and she held on to things. Gave her water a few times. She held it down.

12/26 I started to bottle feed with goats milk. Still isolation with heating pad. Eyes looked a bit more "aware" offered a bit of wet canned cat food. Drags herself with her paws. I cut her nails. Clip the hair around her butt so she won't get messy. She poops. No blood.

12/27 to 12/28 gradual regaining of senses, appitite, ability to walk somewhat. She walks in circles with her head tilted. Theis is a sure sign of brain damage. But from everything I've read this condition will get better as time goes on.

I think she will always be special needs.

I've decided to name her "Noel."

I'll post a picture as soon as I can. My camera fried, and due to the holidays I am not getting steady paychecks.

Poor little kitty! She is so fortunate that you found her! I hope she will make a full recovery for you.

You should've taken the poor thing to a vet office. Your heart was in the right place but what you have done is no favor to the kitty. Not really. The poor thing likely has internal damage and she's probably in a great deal of pain.

Please, please, please...get her to someone who can care for her properly. I'm sure you have rescues in the area that will take her in and see that she gets the proper medical attention.

Quite likely she was clipped by a car. In which case, internal injuries such as internal bleeding is likely. Going through a rescue might be best ... especially if the case should be that financially you would be unable to foot the vet bill.

Call a vet. Tell them you thought she was roadkill and turned out to be alive. Often they will work with you to help you save the animal's life. She may be in a great deal of pain and without X-rays you will not know the extent of her injuries. She may still die without help from a vet.

That was very nice what you did, otherwise she would have been road kill and not made it regardless and you are giving her a chance.

I used to work at a wildlife rescue center. Baby squirrels who fell from the nest often came in with brain damage.The worst one we ever got in I took home for rehab in a huge parrot cage. It took a couple of years, but she finally regained normal movement. I named her brain-damaged-squirrel. But then I named my pony "pony". My cats do have cute names though.

Thanks. She is actually getting much better. She is climbing the couch and wandering around the living room. She still circles and tilts her head. She has a lot of guts.

Today I got her an extra small dog crate, and a corner "ferret" type litter box and moved her into it. Amazingly within 5 minutes she used the litter box like an old pro. I covered the new crate with a blanket to make it nice and quiet, put the heating pad in it, and some towels. She wanted to get out for a while, but I ignored her. Now she is fast asleap. I still want her to rest as much as possible. I like cats well enough, but after my last two (one died at 13, one was re-homed) I decided the only condition under which I would let a cat into my house was that it be crated when I am not there to supervise. In this case I do not feel guilty. She has a real tendency to fall off of things, so she needs to be watched.
