Cute! We really enjoyed our pet rats, but sadly they're not longer with us
I can highly recommend you get a copy of the Rat Health Manual by Debbie Ducommun; the rat health website Health Guide is quite good too, but a real paper manual is quite nice to have. Give a copy to your vet too.

My wife kept a blog on them for a little while. Small Town News
We have quite a nice "crazy rat people" forum in South Africa, ratanooga. RATANOOGA...

I love it. I'll check out that blog, and resources you've mentioned
. Rats are wonderful pets.

All 4 of my male ratties will be going in to get neutered in March and April. I truly hope I don't lose any. The vet I am taking them to has experience with rat neutering. I have 2 little girl pups that I want to put in with them, and so I need to ensure that there will not be any mating. I also want to eliminate the scent marking. Sorry, but it is true. They picture does not tell you that they do have an odor and it is not all that good.

They are just adorable!
We had gerbils (for many years) and now we have two hamsters, a robo and a Russian dwarf. We haven't tried rats, though.

We neutered the two male rats we had - it's a fairly uncomplicated procedure compared with the same for the girls. Their fur stays much softer too, which is nice.
As long as the vet is using inhaled anaesthetics, it's pretty routine. Things can be a little more dicey with injected ones, I believe.

I opened this page and scrolled down to see the first one, the wrinkly one.

Totally freaked out!!! lol

Will that one stay naked the whole its life??

Do they bite?

I used to have hamsters. They bit my fingers all the time, which did not hurt but more of a surprise. didn't like it though. once they got bigger, it was a different story and I got rid of them.

Other than biting, I found them very cute. Those sleepy little eyes and soft furs...

How big do these animals get?

Casmere is a double rex genetic type. He has actually got very fine, sparse hair. On his arms and face, and tiny nearl invisible hair on his body. This is something like the chineese crested dog. I have a little girl rat too that looks exactly like him. Rex rats have curly hair and when they breed, a small amouunt of kittens come out naked. If he were to breed though, his kittens would have hair.

He is very soft and warm. Rats don't bite, but they do have bad eyesight. If you stick your finger in the cage, and have been eating, they will think you are offering a treat. They have very sharp little claws and use them to climb. They love hanging out in a shirt or vest, so I try to make sure there is a tshirt between me and the claws.

2 of those rats were snake food rats, which are not handled by humans, and are generally nippier and quickly frightened. I have never been bitten by them either. Other than mistaking fingers for food, I have not seen any agression at all.

They are diurnal, so they sleep most of the day, and are usually up to bother you in the early morning, and after the sun goes down.

The males scent mark, and stink a bit like ferrets. You need to stay on top of cage cleaning. They are omnivores and not fussy eaters, but there is a list of foods that they can't eat.

I am getting the four boys neutered over the nex 3 months, mainly to keep the macho musk oder down. Femail rats don't smell as much.

How big: right now they are 8 inches from nose to base of tail with another 8 inches for the tail. So thats about 16 inches total. They are 5 to 6 months old, so they may grow another inch or so. Half of the length is tail. Females are smaller.

A friend used to have "The Three Stooges" (black-hooded) - being around them was like some permanenet micro-puppies.

They have been described as being very puppy like. Mine are always getting into trouble and playing with things. I guess that is why a group of rats is called a "mischief."

I forgot to mention that they are happiest living in groups. A single rat will become depressed.

Default One of my previous rats, Fawn

You've got such a nest of cuties!

This is one of my old crew. She was a shy, funny girl.
