Oh, Judi! I'm so sorry! Just thinking about what you must be feeling brought tears to my eyes.

My vet has the following poem on the wall in his office, I hope it can help you to realise that no matter how hard it may be, it was the right thing to do.

IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

I am very sadden to hear about your loss
I know there is alot of pain right now. It will get better as time goes on. You lost a family member of 20 years.
The memories will bring tears to your eyes but soon you will smile again.

Keep the faith & give yourself time. It will get better - IT WILL

I am so sorry for your loss. I've had to put down several pets in my lifetime and it never gets any easier.

And I agree about adopting some kittens. They are just a delight to have around and you can't stay mad no matter what they do. I have 2 kittens that I found free on craigslist. It's kitten season (really, isn't it always) and there are so many strays that people are finding. One of mine was completely ferral, one was semi, as this lady sort of took the family of cats in, but continued to let them roam outside and breed. Both of them warmed up to me quickly.

Kittens will never replace your boy, but they can provide some comfort.

I wish I had the right words to ease your pain, but I don't. All I can say is I understand the hurt, guilt and silence. I've been there before, still and will have to go there again.

I'm sorry for your pain and loss.
