Hi Puddin, I don't know if petsmart will buy or take your babies you will have to ask them. I use to deal with a Fish Paradise they only sold Aquarium equipment and fish so they where setup to take fish and isolate them until they can be sure they have no decease's. Do you have any mom and pop pet shop's around that sell fish? They might be more apt to trade. Another good reason to try other fish. Like neons and albino catfish. If I remember when they sell you Guppies they sell them by the pair 1 male 1 female. you don't have to take the female but you have to pay for them. There are lots of different type of cool fish that you won't have to worry with babies

I don't know about trading fish at the store. You'd have to check with them. You definitely want to tell them you want male and females...remember, you want more females than males. My husband culls the herd by getting rid of any fish that aren't formed well...it happens

Dave is giving you some great advice...a tank of guppies breeding is a LOT of work.

A few more tips from hubby: the biggest mistake people make is to feed them too much. It takes just a tiny pinch to do it right. He also keeps the light off for a good portion of the time, it avoids lots of algae from forming....and the more gravel you use in the tank, the less fish you should have in there.

I might get a pleco, I don't know. Since I'm only getting 3 fish a week, it might be one of the last ones I get. I'll see when I buy the fish.
Now some of you are going to think I'm mean, but why can't I just leave the babies? Not put them in the special box and all of that. There will be live plants in a months time in the tank, and I will only get 2 kinds, a yellow kind and a purple kind. (We will see when the time comes if this changes or not.) I have time for the fish, but the babies sound like A LOT more work, and I might not have the time for that. Now watch, everyone will disagree and think I'm stupid.

You can do that but keep in mind that the majority of them will become food and the rest will grow up to make more babies

A breeding tank is a simple attachment to the side of a tank that holds babies and they aren't much more a burden than your other fish will be ..
You used the 's' word?
That word isn't in my vocabulary
So .. you simply aren't ..
.. see
And I am sure no one will disagree .. as we are all supporters of whatever your little heart desires

I had an idea. On the guppies, what would happen if I got all males or all females? Then I wouldn't have to worry about babies at all!

If you buy only females you may find that you got more than you paid for......especially when they start shooting out babies. My experience with guppies and platties is that most of the females are already pregnant when you get them.

Sue is absolutely correct, If you want guppies and not worry about babies, buy just males, like I said you will pay full price for 1 fish. If I may make a suggestion I would buy 2 or 3 male guppies (they are very pretty) and get a couple of other type of fish to give your tank some variety. Let me know what you decide Oh yea don't forget Pictures

I got my fish! Well, I got the last of my fish today. I have 7, 4 guppies, 2 glo fish, and 1 swordfish. I've been so busy that I haven't had time to post. I will try to get the pictures up soon. I'm still trying to figure out the gallery. I'll try to describe them to you.
On the guppies, I have a purple one, a yellow one with a orange streak on the top, and a small, split tail one that changes colors in the light (these were the first ones I got). The last one has a huge tail that is white with black lines and spots, and the rest of the fish is brown. It also changes colors in the light and shows a pattern.
The glo fish are red and a florecent yellow with white lines going across their bodies. (Sorry about the spelling. I can't spell to save my live.)
The swordfish on the top is 1/4 dirty yellow and the rest is brown. The tail is brown, except for a fin on the tail that sticks out it's full body length. It's a light green and is lined in black.
I LOVE them! I love just laying on my bed and watching them. It's very relaxing.
So, what do you think?
