Get yourself a bunch of neons instead. They're really pretty (I think they are) and they are a schooling fish so you'll have silver, red and blue flashing across your tank. I had a 10 gallon fresh water for years and I even raised cyclids in it. The key is regular water changes and filter cleaning. Keep in mind you will be reseasoning a tank and that can take some time. There will be some mortality until the good bacteria establish themselves so buy cheap fish with that in mind.
I had two large marbled angelfish, a discus, about 10 neons, a plecostomus, some tetras, and I can't remember what else all at the same time.
Years later I had a 50 gal salt set up. Man was that a bunch of work. Weekly water changes, mid week tank scrubs. Expensive fish that would turn their fins up and die at the drop of a hat. That was a hobby we sank a lot of money into and all it did was stress me out! LOL Now when I want to see salt water lovelies I pack my bag fly to Hawaii or the Caribbean don my snorkel & mask and visit them at home.
