Not all fish don't act the same, some will never get close to you and others will. just dogs and cats, I have one cat that only will put up with being petted is when she whats something (go out, food, ect.) Then there is Stevie all you have to do is touch him or say is name and he will not leave you alone.

There is something really wrong with the flashy guppy. This red patch came out of nowhere. I've been watching it for a couple of days to see what it will do. The red patch used to be dark, if you look at the first pictures I took of it.
This is the purple guppy. It stays at the top all of the time. I can't tell if it's fat or sick or both.
And this is the molly! Isn't it beautiful! I think it's a she.

Looks like your fish has bacteria. I would add some aquarium salts as soon as you can. I would also be adding 5ml of prime until you tank runs its course of cycle - 4 to 6 weeks.
What is your tank tempts on??

It's always at 80 F, or very close to it. What is prime by the way?
How much salt do I use? I've added salt last Monday. I changed some of the water. The directions say add 5 tablespoons for every 5 gallons. Do I need to minus some because there is salt in the water already or not worry about it?

WOW!! that sounds like a lot of salt. I used 1 tablespoon of kosher salt for 5 gallons. And only added more when I did a water change if then. Prime is for removing chlorine and Ammonia. It wouldn't hurt to use some but I don't think it will help. You already had your water tested right?

Uh ok, I wasn't aware that you already had salt in the tank. Don't add anymore. But you could lower ur tempts down to 75 degree's thats kinda hot for liverbearers. Lower the tempts will also help slower the bacteria your fish has.

Re: - Prime, this will help tie up any nitrites & ammonia but still will allow the nitrAtes to continue to process the way it should. And your fish will thank you for it.

Do you have 3 or 4% peroxide? If so ... you add 1 tablespoon in a cup of tank water and slowly add to the tank. This will open up the fishes gills and help with the oxygen flow. Shake the bottle first.

P S- I just noticed that your UGF has no power filter to push the water down between the under gravel bed -- this will NOT work, they're is NO cirulation below. Do you have any other filter running in this tank??

I'm sorry. I was in a hurry and forget to tell you some things. The 5 TBS is for sick fish. Normally you add 1/2 a TBS for every gallon, which I have been doing. That is stupid of me, sorry. I will try to get the temp. down, but my lights produce a lot of heat, but I will try anyway. I haven't played all of my tricks yet.
On the filter, I have a power filter and a UGF. When I went to the pet store she said I had everything that was needed for it. I have air pumps behind the tank that are making bubbles in the clear tubes. I also felt some warm water by the carbon filled containers sometime this week, too.

You can open the lid to let some of the heat out from the light. that should help a little. I had great success with a lot less salt then that. and even none at all. Some fish are more sensitive to salt then others so depending what type of fish you plan on keeping. Its been awhile since I have had a tropical tank so which ones they are, I cant be sure. You do know that you only put salt in once, or if you do a water change. You a only suppose to replace what you removed with the water. Salt does not evaporate or disappear, if the water gets low the salinity go's up

Another way to reduce the heat in your tank is to replace the incandescent lights with fluorescents. In a small 10 gallon tank it's difficult to regulate the temps, kind of like having too small of a greenhouse. I think fluoro's make the fish look prettier too.

If you had a small sick tank you could throw your guppy in that and treat with tetracyclyn. Can you see your money flying out the door yet?

Dave I think Mollies are one of the ones that will tolerate brackish water. I had a friend way back in college who set a marine tank and she used Mollies as her start up fish instead of damsels. I was shocked at how easily they adapted to salt water. It was weird.

I believe the rule for tank size is 1 gallon per inch of fish.
