You can keep them with other small very docile fish, but even then you have to watch for problems. Fish that are known fin nippers, like barbs, must be avoided.

I tried breeding them many years ago. On one occasion, i introduced a female into the males tank. She seemed to take to him OK (the females dont always want to breed...go figure). I thought all was well, and went to bed. Big mistake. I woke up to find him near the surface, with nearly all of his fins gone or shredded. She tore the hell out of him. He actually recovered, but not nearly as colorful and full.

He had commitment issues from then on.

They are pretty easy really. In the wild, they are found in small shallow pools, rice patty fields, and even puddles. They are one of the few labyrinthine fishes, meaning they can take small gulps of air from the surface, and process it in a labyrinth type chamber near the gills. Some are picky about processed foods (flakes, pellets), but otherwise they are very low maintenance.

Is it some special variety? They are stunning! They are amazing! I just don't have enough words to express my feelings. So, how do you call them to distinguish from ordinary looking fighting fish? Why are they beautiful for only two months? What happens after?

You are right, that they get along with other fish, but really the only fish they fight with are their own kind. Bigger fish including Angelfish pick on them and either eat them or pick at their fins.

Should be ok to keep one in a community tank.

That all blue one is gorgeous! I'll have to get a pic of mine. I have it in a 10 gallon tank with a Cory, 5 Neons and 3 Glowlites...and soon to pick up Otocinclus to clean up algae which suddenly appeared!
