I have plenty of greys whom I try to divert from the bird feeders by giving their own stash of critter food (this ain't too successful by the way). Down in Granbury TX where my late mother lived, there were lots of red squirrels. While playing golf at Granbury CC the squirrels would approach the golf cart looking for handouts - but they were particular, not just any ol' thing would do, it had to be pecans! I remember one round where we were attempting to putt (now I have to tell you that the greens at Granbury CC are about as big as a living room rug!) but we couldn't because the squirrels were standing all over the green between us and the cup. Anyone remember the ruling for moveable obstructions!

There's a big population of melanistic (black) squirrels in DC, too.

White squirrel
This story so sad.....
White squirrel death goes global
Abli, Snowy or Percy lived in a churchyard off Dorking High Street
Residents in a Surrey town have expressed their amazement at the global response to the death of an albino squirrel in a road accident.
The squirrel, known as Albi, Percy or Snowy by different animal lovers in Dorking, was run over in October.
A shrine was set up in his honour at St Martin's Churchyard, where he lived, and press and TV covered the story.
"It is amazing. We have had e-mails from all over the world," said Rick Parish, chamber of commerce president.
The squirrel had lived in the churchyard off Dorking High Street for five years and was a favourite with local children and wildlife lovers.
Squirrel offered
In the United States, Fox News covered Albi's death, with anchorman Shepard Smith describing the "recent tragedy in the small town of Dorking, England".
"The Chamber of Commerce in Olney, Illinois offered to ship a squirrel across to us," said Mr Parish.
"Apparently they have 200 albino squirrels living there."
A pub in Dorking has been selling squirrel memorial shopping bags and mugs and councillors have discussed erecting a statue.
Mr Parish said the town already had a cockerel as an emblem.
"Now it sounds as though we could end up with a white squirrel instead," he said.
"It is a fantastic bit of fun and has really pulled everybody together.
"It has taken everybody by surprise how much Albi caught everyone's imagination."

Cristabel
This is my little friend. I call her Cristabel She has an injured right paw. Lives in a huge photenia next to the house. Comes when she hears the bells jingle. I love her.
The other day she thought my finger was a peanut. She would not let go. I had to bite my tung so I would not scream. She did not know. My Fault. Lori

The eyes don't look pink, so it may not be a true albino.
In the area around Brevard, NC, there is a population of white squirrels. They don't interbreed with the "normal" squirrels.
As for tasty, well, a lot of people prefer white meat!

I agree! No matter what, seems like they still want to eat the birdfood too. They do all kinds of acrobatic stunts to get on the hanging bird feeders.

Yep, the eyes are a dark pink color. It was hard to capture the color on my camera but I've seen it up close by the patio door before in person. Sometimes, I wonder if it's able to see "clearly" because it's not as jumpy and quick to run away as the other squirrels when I stand by the door to watch.
