I agree, there are many animals bought or for sale that are not treated right. I agree that many pets are mistreated and/or abandoned simply because little 'Johnny' or 'Susie' will scream their head off if they don't get their way.
I agree that too many animals, snakes and other exotics are being released in the Everglades and other area's where they must fend for themselves or die. Or become a danger to other animals or humans.
This is a HUGE problem, no doubt about it. It needs to be addressed.
But there are many children basically in the same boat. They are birthed, adopted and imported much as the animals. They are also mistreated, murdered, assaulted, starving and homeless.
It's a HUGE and heartbreaking problem. But should we all be sterilized or forbidden to have children until we are studied by the government and added to an approved list?
There is very little difference. Both issues involve our rights. I, for one, don't want to lose my rights. But then, I may have to wait someday to voice my opinions.....until I'm added to the "approved" list.

I worked in a pet shop. Animal shelter ,and for a veterinarian at various stages made a few people mad, Example little Johnny wanted a hamster mom said ok but you have to feed and clean it ! Wait! a 5 year old carrying a 10 gal aquarium think not. I told her she would end up cleaning the aquarium and feeding if she was not willing to do that then don't buy , she didn't .
In the shelter a woman came in and wanted to adopt a female dog she was told it would have to be spayed she did not want that wanted the kids to see it have puppies my reply was when you can't find homes for the puppies are you going to bring the kids in to watch them being put to sleep she left mad .. veterinary office a woman with a limp sick dog question how long has it been ill answer a couple of weeks .. It is not the animals that should be on a list . Gin

Gin,
Thanks for the heads up on this atrocious bill. It just amazes me what some of the crud that our elected officials think they can get away with! Its just so frustrating so I try to do what I can to get these morons either out of office or voice my opposition. Some people just have no common sense and they still get elected!!!
P.S. You can follow the bill here: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-669 Near the top of the page you can click to see who the cosponsor for this bill are. I have to say that some of the policians that I despise the most are cosponsors, so I wont say any more. Check it out.

I agree that pets should be looked after properly, if not they should be taken off the owner.
I on the other hand had a pet fish, and I think I looked after it too well. It was a crocodile fish and was about three feet long My poor poodle has no tail now after the croc dragged it into the pong........ It was only looking and trying to work out what that ugly thing was
I chopped it up for dog food lol. The fish that is.

Gin, I reached out to my Congresswoman, I wanted to show you the letter I received in response!!
June 2, 2009
Ms. Rebecca Luce
Chicago, Illinois 60613
Dear Ms. Luce: Thank you for contacting me to urge that I oppose H.R. 669, the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act. I appreciate hearing from you. I understand and appreciate the complexity of this issue. Every year, thousands of nonnative wild animals are legally imported to the United States to supply the pet, aquarium, live food, live bait, and other industries. While the overwhelmingly majority of these animals are handled properly, by responsible pet and store owners, some of these animals are irresponsibly released into the wild and become invasive species in their new surroundings. An excellent example of that phenomenon is the Asian Carp, which were imported by catfish farmers in the 1970's to remove algae in ponds, but have since wreaked havoc on Lake Michigan's ecosystem. H.R. 669, is intended to address the phenomenon, however, I agree with you that in its current form, the legislation does not do enough to protect the rights of responsible pet and store owners. Therefore, I will contact Representative Nick Rahall, Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee, and relay my concerns with the bill. Again, I appreciate hearing from you. If I can be of assistance to you in the future, please let me know.
Sincerely, Jan Schakowsky,Member of Congress

I doubt this bill will pass, its just too egregious, even for today's politicians! I sent a letter off to my congressman some time back and I wish I had saved the response. It was pretty similar to Becky's congressman.

This bill looks like a load of crock.
Besides the already-stated reasons, if this bill passes it will start a process that erode our rights what we can or cannot have.
We all know the havoc that plants such as kudzu, water hyacinth, and purple loostrife have done upon American ecosystems. Why not pass a ban on all non-native species of plant (including orchids) for personal gardening? They may not seem like a threat now, but you can't be too sure.
Despite stringent measures, species such as zebra mussel can still hitch a ride in ship ballasts. The result is damages not only in the environmental sense but in an economic/infrastructural sense as well. Let's ban shipping, even at the expense of our already crippled economy.
Pigs and goats escape from farms and become feral. Ban them.
The selective nature of orchards can cause genetic-related diseases to be passed on to wild plants. Ban them.
See a pattern here?
Besides, a lot of species are extinct/endangered in the wild and are only being on this earth due to breeding programs by responsible pet owners.
