Not quite a pet, he thinks he owns the place
This hummingbird is actually a bully - he doesn't let anybody else anywhere near the feeder. But he is hanging around on my patio a lot. Some of these photos were taken only about 3 feet (1 m) from the little guy and he was not bothered. Other pix were a bit farther, my little pocket size point-and-shoot ultra-zoom Lumix, 30x optical zoom does quite well. Burst mode lets me get some fleeting moments. Like when he's sticking his tongue out in #2. And for 7-10, he was sitting on a plant hanger, there was one tiny hummingbird chirp somewhere nearby, and I don't know if it was a female and he was saying "Hi, toots, look at me..." or if it was a male maybe he was saying "My territory". But the whole transition from drab little bird to shining jewel happened in the blink of an eye.
For the record, this is a male Anna's Hummingbird

Those are great pictures!
Hummingbirds can be quite territorial. The weirdest thing I ever saw was a small group of six humming birds flying together from tree to tree one autumn. I have never seen a group of them together like that before or since.

too funny! i JUST learned about this behavior
my neighbor down the street who is a great birder asks me for physical help from time to time and she came and asked me how she could hang like 10 more hummer feeders and i looked at her like she was insane and she said there are five really bossy ones that keep the others away so se wants to out number them with feeders lol
we rigged a nice set up with a piece of closet wire shelving across two 7' u posts hammered in 2' very similar to what i copied of Steven for orchid hanging
amazing pics
so now she has a phlanyx of feeders lol

I put my 3 feeders on 3 sides of my house so they can't see each other. I enjoy late winter when the males do their dive bomb mating dance.

Wow! You guys really do have much more interesting garden visitors than my boring garden birds in the uk!
The closest I get to a hummingbird is the three tattooed on my clavicle 😂

This is nesting season for Anna's hummingbird in the low desert. I see females heavy with eggs at my feeders. They stay here all year, unlike the other species we may see in summer. They don't go into the urban neighborhoods, but only the partially natural areas with desert washes. I'm extremely careful about pruning this time of year.

Oh that's absolutely adorable! (beside the bully antic)
I have one that came by my honeysuckle plant every morning, it never venture in the growing area but It's a pleasant mood every time it visits.
