At 8 weeks old he had no idea about the wonderful folks he would get to know and he would be loved unconditionally. Much like a marriage-in sickness and in health. In his own way, he returned that love to you many times over. Bless you for knowing what to do when it became necessary. Many of us can relate to this experience. Memories stay forever. Be well.

Thank you all for your lovely comments.

I'm just so happy he had the life any dog deserves, never a night spent outside, never too hot or cold, never went hungry for food or affection. Medical attention when needed. A daily walk until it became too painful and a sunny garden to lie in soaking up the heat.

Everyones pets have their own little idiosyncrasies and Cooper was no different.

My lovely neighbours always said that he must love you lots because when we both went out together he howled for a minute then settled down. Thats how they knew we had gone out.

We have wooden floors throughout the house and he walked normally everywhere except the kitchen. He walked in normally but when he wanted to leave he always reversed out, always stretching out his back right leg till his foot connected with the rug.

When he was younger he certainly enjoyed it when we watered the garden, his 'job' was to catch the water as it left the hose. Didn't mind getting wet at all in those circumstances.....but if you tried to bath him that was a whole other story!

Our other dog Holly (Jack Russell) is certainly missing him, since Monday she wants to sit on my knee at night instead of her usual perch, the padded footstool next to my chair.

I'll really miss seeing him in his usual spot, the highest in the garden which allowed him a view of the hills and straight into the family room where he could keep his eye on us.

Sounds like Cooper had a great life with loving people. Wish for all dogs to have the same. They ask so little of us, and in return they give us their all.

May his love be with your heart, and memories close at hand.

Feeling very sad for you. I've been there many times and I know how hard it is even if it was the right thing to do.
Glad you've got so many fond memories - they all live on in that way. 🤗
