black pits on phal leaves
Default black pits on phal leaves

I noticed these black pit spots on one of my phal orchids. I have had it for several months and just noticed the damage.

Could this be spider mites? I looked the plant over and over last night and wiped the leaves with tissue paper. I never saw anything but could have easily missed the signs.

It has been sitting next to another oncidium orchid and a Chinese evergreen. Neither of those plants show any damage.

I don't have an prior experience with pests other than gnats that a lot of house plants get. So I was hoping someone had seen this before and could give me some advice.

I attached a picture of the leave in question, the whole plant and one of the other leaves for comparison.

thanks

I agree. "Beaten up" a while ago, or "munched on" by a larger insect or mollusk (you'd see slime trails if recent).

Unless it gets worse, I'd not worry about it, and the plant looks great otherwise.

Thanks so much for the replies. I thought the same thing at first and then I second guessed myself because I didn't remember seeing the damage when I bought it. I usually look over a plant when I first get it so if something changes I will know. I simply couldn't remember and thought that it might be new. I will still keep an eye on just in case.

I am also paranoid about spider mites because I have read about how terrible the damage is they do and how hard they are to get rid of.

Their damage is more like stippling. Also, your plant may not have shown the full extent of the damage when you bought it.
