Whats wrong with my Paphiopedilum stonei orchid?
Default Whats wrong with my Paphiopedilum stonei orchid?

I found this orchid (paph stonei according to the tag) sitting at a thrift store for $1 so of course I couldn't pass it up. My questions is whats wrong with its leaves? The new ones come out all nice and green and they turn into this (see pics) over time. Any clue as to what it is and how it can be fixed? Also, when I rub the areas with rubbing alcohol it gives off a slight reddish colour.

I would love to see this one bloom!

thanks in advance!

Sounds like it could be red spider mites. http://phelpsfarm.com/orchid pests and diseases has good info and fotos. That species is a warm -hot grower so read as much as you can find. A lovely and most unusual flower.

I concur with the diagnosis of spider mites. Something stronger than alcohol is called for. Bayer's 3-in-1 does contain a miticide, but most of the formulation is oriented toward insects (which mites aren't) A dedicated miticide would be better... others on this forum have some favorites. However, for the short term, you can spray with a horticultural oil with dish soap added to smother the little bastards. However, you need to do this repeatedly to nail new generations because it doesn't touch the eggs and has no residual effect. Probably once a week for a month or two will be effective. (You do need to be persistent)
