Brown spotted rings on Oncidium Sandrinho Male
Default Brown spotted rings on Oncidium Sandrinho

Just received delivery of an Oncidium Sandrinho. The appearance of the leaves is worrying me, though. There are lots of rings of dark brown spots on nearly all the leaves on the plant. The affected areas are a slightly yellower color than the rest of the leaf.
A few photos:

Apart from this spotting, the plant appears to be in fine health - it's currently in bloom with a total of 6 spikes.

Any ideas what this spotting is, and what I should do about it?

Looks like it's trying to emulate the wrapping paper in the photo.

It's a beautiful plant. Hope it's not a virus.

Look forward to hearing answers from the experts.

If it were my plant I would want to get it tested. Do you have a lab you could send it to, or can you get the test strips?

On the lab front, nope. I'll ask around some other friends to see if they know where I might get testing strips from. Meanwhile I'm isolating it and keeping it under close observation.

I don't know the rules for sending plant material internationally, but you could contact Critter Creek Labs info@crittercreeklab.com to find out... they are closed from February 10 to mid-March according to their website, but perhaps they are picking up emails. From their website their prices seem very reasonable if the logistics can be managed. I know that they have been doing this for years.

I know people who smuggle orchids across the border due to the monstrously tight controls and high costs of doing it legally, so I'd imagine it'd be nigh on impossible. Thanks for the idea, though.

For a test, one only needs to send a small piece of leaf (in a plastic bag or other impervious material) in an envelope. So this should be much less complicated than transporting plants. One would need to use express mail, the sample would need to be no more than a few days in transit to be useful.

I'm in your position now with a possibly virused plant and no clue where to get tests.

Where do they sell the strips online?
