Maroon spots all over Laelia sincorana
Default Maroon spots all over Laelia sincorana

I just ordered several orchids from my wishlist from an orchid nursery and the Laelia sincorana does not look happy. There are maroon or dark reddish spots all over the plant including on the new growths. Any ideas on what this is, is it reversible, or should I send this plant back? I'm not sure if it's sunburn or a disease.

The other plants I ordered where a Encyclia Chien Ya Sm (Encyclia polybulbon x Encyclia cordigera) which came in with yellowing leaves, a Epidendrum porpax which looks good and they threw in a small Encyclia alboxanthina which was in perfect shape.

Thanks for your input in advance.

It doesn't look unacceptable to me; many Laeliae develop red stippling on leaves and bulbs when grown under high light conditions. It's a natural function of leaf tissues. A lot of the "high light" growers should show markings like this--it's a sign that they're getting optimal light.

Feed a few times with magnesium or add some Epsom salts to watering for a little while see if that helps.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

The purple spots are good news, not merely tolerable. Many Cattleyas grown in sufficient light have these spots.

Some plant develop yellowing leaves when shipped, especially if it takes a while and the leaves are thin, as they are in Smile.

Ah, good, just a sun tan. Great, I don't have to worry.

I will add some Cal-Mag to the water for a while and see it if makes a difference.

Thank you so much for your feedback, I appreciate it very much.
