If you use the store-bought insecticide soap, how long do you leave it on the plant and what if it gets into the media?

Are you unpotted when you spray or is it okay if some gets into the roots?

Insecticidal soap is a biodegradable product. Assuming the product you have is normal formulation used at a normal rate there is no need to wash it off the plant or worry about it getting in the media, except with very delicate plants - filmy ferns, some mosses, some carnivorous plants, not most orchids. It will wash away or break down on its own.

It sometimes leaves a shiny or sticky residue. If you don't like that, you can rinse it off with water once it's done its job.
