Use of cinnamon in orchids

And I agree that prevention is a lot better way to avoid needing any sort of pesticides!

Since I started regularly using the plant probiotic, Inocucor Garden Solution, I have not seen any rots, so not had to use any fungicides.

More Calcium has made a big difference for me with the houseplants. I don't have any issues with them. The fruit trees, though, still need to be blasted with Captan. We tried a 'natural' product one year and had fungus issues with the apples and moldy peaches. Needless to say, we went back to Captan the next year.

What is here called "natural" control is only very limited in their effectiveness, and some are complete bogus based on speculations or imaginations.

Otherwise, large commercial growers will be using them all the time, but the reality is not so.

but then, many of us here are relatively small scale hobby growers.

I suspect that the study might have used concentrated extract form?

I understand that cinnamon oil has such property, but in powder form, or even in the form of bark itself, the amount is just too small that it may not be the same at all as far as getting the desired results.

Speaking of oil or extract, those small dark brown bottles of cinnamon extract sold at health stores, they are mainly alcohol and can harm the plants.

I used them on the plant in the past and never again!

While the "killing the bacteria " part was a lab study, my doctor showed me a study in which traditional ulcer medications were compared to cinnamon (in capsules, but in the amount one might ingest with food), and placebos, and both treatments beat the placebo in ulcer reduction.

Don't kid yourself - powdered grocery store cinnamon has a lot of cinnamaldehyde in it. Follow my extraction instructions, and you'll have a decent fungicide. Also, I don't know what alcohol may be in those extracts, but I have used 70% isopropanol on plants for years, and have never seen any issue. I usually extract the cinnamaldehyde using 1Tbsp powder in a pint of alcohol...
