I can't seem to get A+ roots from my Cattleyas, Schomburgkias, and Dendrobiums. A lot of my roots are like Yoggie's. Especially my Schomburgkia. Any tips?

A good open medium, with lots of watering, will help with root growth.

Throwing in a good stimulant like KelpMax once a month will help, too.

This is often found in old Cyms which have old BBs with roots still attached. Nothing more than dead root, stele velamen and all. Sometimes with small holes in them, I suspect insect damage from little critters loving the rotting media and root environment. A little different from Yoggie's external problem but does occur in and outside the pots under certain conditions.

Humidity makes a huge difference to roots outside the medium in the pot. On windowsills with low humidity, roots wandering out of the pot often die back to the pot. In higher humidity they grow out in the air. It has been very obvious since I put an evaporative cooler blowing on my plants, and relative humidity is now always above 60%.
