Phalaenopsis root with white ribbed tracks
Default Phalaenopsis root with white ribbed tracks

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here. I look forward to introducing myself later but for now I am concerned about this phal my boyfriend just bought me from Home Depot.

Can anyone please tell me if the's strange looking textured marks mean that the roots are infected? If so how should I treat them? Should I repot now? It is past the peak of it's bloom but still has all of its flowers. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Best,
-Jenna

From what I can see in your pictures and my personal experience with Phal's--I think those are just "rub marks" where the roots grew along the side of the pot.

I see this with some of my roots that are growing outside the potting medium (bark) that rub against other roots, or leaves, or flower stalks.

I don't think you have an "issue" as, again my personal experience, this is not an uncommon issue.

Let's definitely hear from some of the other members here before you take any action(s) or to totally ease your concerns.
But I think you, and the plant, are fine.

I am inclined to agree with Chuck, the marks don't look like anything threatening. The roots inside of the pot look very good. I'm not much of a Phal grower myself but without seeing the plant it is harder to tell if there are any problems with conditions.

Most growers repot new plants especially from HD, Lowes, grocery store as their care has not been the best and a lot of them have been overwatered and/or generally neglected. How does the plant look?

Thank you so much for the welcome! I already love these phals and am much relieved to hear that the marks on the roots shouldn't be a problem.

The rest of the plant looks good to me. The leaves and roots look mostly healthy though I can see that at least one is dead. The blooms are beginning to wilt so I think I'm going to wait until they drop to repot although I am anxious to get a better look at the root system.

I lost my first phal last year after I reported it. The buds blasted and the rest of the plant went downhill from there. I think that the roots had already been compromised in the store but I still felt really bad and am giving it a second go this season.

Thanks again for the help!

In the second photo, looks like the root stopped growing for a while, then started again

Enjoy your Phal.
They are a personal favorite of mine.

Check around the site and see how others are caring for their Phals and how they have re-potted them.
Knowing ahead of time the best way(s), and what you will need, will be a real help when it's time to re-pot your's

One thing: DON'T cut off the flower stalk after your plant finishes blooming!
I have 1/2 dozen Phal's that have re-bloomed a second time on an older stalks.
One is finishing up it's 3rd year of flowers on an old stalk!

And, em ((cough-cough)) pics when it blooms would be nice
