I use the Bayer formula for roses (I have a few roses). There are directions on the canister. How much you add is based on the height and fullness of a plant (just picture a rose bush and try to be proportional). You move the top layer of soil away and distribute the fertilizer as evenly as possible, then return the soil. It may take a few weeks to see the effects.
Just a caution...I would advise to water the plant first, then add the granular fertilizer, then water well again and not to let the plant dry out for a few weeks. Don't apply the fertilizer directly on the roots of a sensitive plant. When I started using the eight-week formula, I lost some of the houseplants I had been growing a long time and nearly lost a prized one...fertilizer burn. I never had a problem with the six-week formula.
