Unhappy Phalaenopsis, leaves withering and drying out

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I am looking for help with one of my four plants what seems to be quite unwell unfortunately. After repotting it got steadily worse. I repotted again after clearing out dead and rotten roots. This is how it looks today. Any advice welcome. Watering pattern is every week.

Hi Chris_T, Welcome!

This happens with Phalaenopsis often with beginners. Don't feel badly. Your plant looks better than many and it will probably live. You didn't post photos of the roots, but don't unpot the plant to take root photos.

Your plant didn't get enough water. This can be either because you didn't water enough (less likely), or the roots were mostly dead and couldn't provide water to the plant (more likely.) The commonest cause of roots dying is overwatering at any time, or being cold and wet. Phalaenopsis like to be warmer than many people keep their houses in the winter.

The bark you used looks good. If the plant has good roots, it will recover, grow more roots and leaves, and resume growing. The old leaves may stay wrinkled like that or they may return to normal.

Put the plant where the humidity is as high as possible to minimize water loss through the leaves. Water it when the bark is almost completely dry. It may help to use a kelp solution. These have rooting hormones in them. They are often sold at garden centers or hydroponics stores. Water with the kelp solution once a week for now, and use regular water for other waterings. When the plant is recovered, use the kelp solution once a month.

You can read about checking the dampness of the medium with a wooden cooking skewer here:

You can read more about taking care of Phalaenopsis here:

The Phal abuse ends here.

Default Leaves going more yellow

Thanks for the advice.

One question though. The leaves seem to be getting worse every day. Going all the more yellow as time passes. Does this observation make a difference to the treatment you suggest?

Thanks very much again.

If the leaves continue to get worse, that suggests the roots might all be dead. Look through the thread I referenced. How did your roots look compared to some of those?

Before the last repotting it had only a few good roots. At this point I don't know. Should I just take it out or not? From the outside of the pot I can see some green and some dead ones.

If it looks that badly, it might be a good idea to take it out and cut off the bad roots. I personally like to use the vase method for shriveled phals with just a few roots. I just wrote to somebody about that here:

Help- NoID Phal getting corrugated leaves??

So, basically what I do is take a vase, fill it with water, put the plant inside, leave it there for a few hours, empty the water and do the same the next day... right?

I don't have kelp, only an orchid fertilizer, will this do?

Yes, that is how you water with the vase method.

The kelp has growth hormones. Those are not in the fertilizer. The kelp isn't necessary, but it helps. I would use a small amount of fertilizer for your plant. Aim for around 20 parts per million PPM of nitrogen in the water. You can calculate the amount to add per liter with the nitrogen number on the label, using the nitrogen calculator here:

Ok, started already. From what I saw there were 5-6 good roots and perhaps 3-4 rotten ones. Thanks very much for everything.
