Default Mechanical damage or something more sinister?

Two of the pictures show the damage in question.

This is my 10 year old daughter's first orchid. When we went to the store, she saw this plant and excitedly asked if she could buy it for me. She followed up with, " I brought my wallet with me!". I told her I would rather she bought it for herself and that I would help her care for it. It would obviously need repotting since the bark bore a closer resemblance to soil than bark. The roots are in good shape though. The plant is doing well after repotting and she frequently goes to see it and to enjoy its beauty.
