Oncidium(?) - tiny black spots on pseudobulb and leaves
Default Oncidium(?) - tiny black spots on pseudobulb and leaves

Hello,

A friend has asked me to look at an orchid which is not doing so well here.

I suspect it is a Oncidium but I am not certain, and there are these tiny black dots that appear on the pseudobulbs and the back side of the leaves. The dots on the pseudobulbs don't seem to have caused any change in texture, and the dots on the leaves are a bit sunken.

I have not encountered this before, is this likely caused by fungal growth?

Thank you for your help.

The freckles on the top of the pseudobulb look more like pigment to me. Oncidiums are prone to spotting and there isn't always a lot you can do except provide some good moving air and other proper cultural conditions for it. That one bulb appears to be in a very large pot. Hopefully all the roots aren't rotting although they don't care to dry out completely.

I would take it out and check the root, since the bulb is wrinkle and seem to be dehydrated.

Thank you for your help! I wonder what causes pigments?

As for the root system, it may not be doing great either as told by the wrinkly appearance of the bulbs, and the large pot doesn't have a drain hole. I am planning to help repot it to a smaller plastic pot with holes once after acquiring some supplies this weekend.

No drain holes will likely be causing rot rot.
The pigment is cause by light. It is likely getting as much or more than it needs.
