Default Disease in roots?

My daughter gave me a noid phalaenopsis; after she brought it, she noticed what she called 'fuzziness' on a root. It just looked to me like dust, and maybe cobwebs... but it doesn't look like spider mites, and anyway, wouldn't those be on the leaves rather than the roots? I would post a pic if I had a clue how to do it. Does this sound like fungus or something?

Could be mold or possibly the start of mealybugs. Look closely at it with magnification.
