Dark and shriveled spots on Phal roots
Default Dark and shriveled spots on Phal roots

I've had this plant for over a year, and it was doing well until recently, when I noticed some dark spots on the arial roots. I un-potted it and found more spots on the roots- especially towards the ends. It also has a new leaf growing that seems to have a spot. The older leaves look OK. It lives in a clay pot, and I water it about once a week.

Any advice about how to treat this would be appreciated, pictures attached.

Thanks!

The roots look OK for the most part. I can't see the spot on the leaf so I can't comment. The shriveled part might be from low humidity or mechanical damage. If you grow it in very chunky bark with lots of air spaces around the roots you should let it get almost dry before watering again. That might be more than once weekly depending on temperature/humidity in your growing area.

If the roots are firm it might be nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reply- that's reassuring. I was just worried the spots might be an infection of some sort. I have it planted in a moss mixture- I usually let it get dry between waterings, but it's been a lower humidity season so maybe I need to water more often than once a week- I'll keep an eye on it.
